At Sea

A rare carved Kina shell from Papua New Guinea comes from the Gold-lipped oyster (pinctada Maxima), and was cut into crescents called kina. Usually plain and shimmering, this kina is carved into a fish. (late 1800's) Traditionally used for currency in trade, Kina is now the name for currency in PNG. In keeping with the tribal quality of the piece, it is finished with horn, MOther of Pearl and brass. Frame included.
